How to Reduce Your Stress as a Truck Driver

Truck drivers don’t have it easy. Whether it’s driving through traffic, meeting deadlines, driving long distances, or even just being away from home, there are multiple stressors a truck driver undergoes. Stress is a normal response when there are pressures in your life, and it can be incredibly taxing for your physical and mental health. There are many signs that you are experiencing chronic stress, including:

  • Headaches
  • Racing thoughts
  • Forgetfulness
  • Low energy
  • Upset stomach
  • Easily agitated
  • And many more!

You should not ignore these signs of stress and cope with them in a healthy way. You need to put these practices in place to help yourself.

Step away from negative thoughts

Negative thoughts hurt you more than you would think. Spending your mental energy focused on the things you can’t change and being mindful of when you are doing that is a great way to help reduce your stress. Physically removing yourself from the truck at a gas station or rest stop will allow you to stretch your muscles and relax. When doing this, you could also meditate to take your mind away from the stresses you’ve been experiencing. Having a clear head when embarking on your journey will help you be mindful of the things that actively bring you stress and how to avoid them.

Listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks.

Listening to music is a great way to take your mind off the stresses of the road. It can also make you happier in your drive, which in turn could release your stresses by making you feel more relaxed. Listening to a podcast or audiobook also can give you the stimulation you need to help you focus and relieve some of your tension. Calming music or relaxing podcasts are great unless they make you feel sleepy, so we recommend putting on something you enjoy! When driving, make sure you are still focused on the road.
